Preventive Care in Chinese medicine: The Lost Art of the Well-Visit

Reaping the Benefits Of Acupuncture treatment in every phase of our lives

I get new patients every day who tell me they’ve “already tried everything” and this is their last resort. Helping folks in such intense states who need urgent support is significant, don't get me wrong. Acupuncture is indeed a perfect option for sciatic pain that won't respond to steroid injections, migraines that are coming more and more often, or carpal tunnel with a surgery date looming. Getting relief when patients feel hopeless is deeply satisfying, but it's not the only time you should come in for acupuncture.

You don’t need to be in the midst of a crisis, or even in poor health to benefit from this medicine. Some of the most transformative work can be done when there isn’t a fire to put out. When we are not moving from crisis to crisis there is space to balance and align the body as we move through everyday stress and challenges.

In fact, in China, it used to be customary to pay for routine acupuncture, but if the patient fell ill treatments would be free because the acupuncturist hadn’t upheld their end of the bargain.

How does it work? And how often should I come in?

In Western medicine, we see the body as a machine. Either it's operating at full capacity- and therefore in perfect condition- or it isn’t operating properly so we scan for the problem and fix it. In Chinese medicine, we see the body as an ever-growing and changing garden. A garden is a full ecosystem that has dynamic needs depending on the season, the climate, and what is being cultivated. With this metaphor, we acknowledge the role that gentle tending, pruning, and watering can play in helping this organism thrive.

Ongoing well visits can take many different forms. You can simply come in for an hour of relaxation, we can do treatments specifically for stress or athletic performance, or even treatments focused on tuning into the natural world and what's going on seasonally in nature. We recommend monthly or biweekly for this type of care.

If you’re in a network with Aetna, Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Carefirst, or United Health Care, these visits are an incredible way to utilize those benefits for your ongoing health. For those out of network, we offer a buy 5 get 1 free package which perfectly covers 6 months of well visits.
