Our summer travel tips

How can you prepare to stay comfortable while traveling

We asked our providers to get together an come up with tips to keep you comfortable as you travel this summer!

Here’s a breakdown of what everyone had to say:

The BEST posture is your next posture. Whether driving or flying, it is easy to feel stiff after travel. Here are some super simple mobility tips and tricks to keep you feeling your best this summer.

If you are driving long distances, take note of the way you sit in your seat:

  • If your hands are on top of the wheel while driving for long periods of time, you may feel strain in your shoulder blades

      • Switch which arm is on the wheel or drop your hands to the lower part of the wheel on occasion to pull your arms back by your sides

  • Play with your seat positioning throughout the trip (moving the seat forward and backward to shift your hip position)

  • If you lean toward the center console (as the driver or passenger), try leaning the other way on occasion

  • Do a little chin tuck on occasion (think of bringing your chin to your throat) to undo strain on the neck

  • If you feel a lot of neck tension, let your hair down or remove your hat so your head can rest appropriately against the headrest

  • Point the air conditioning AWAY from your neck (especially if you plan to take a nap)-Keeping your neck in one position for a long period of time with cool air blowing directly in one spot can cause tight muscles when you wake up (we see this in patients who sleep on planes with their necks in uncomfortable positions and have the air blowing directly on them)

In summary, if you feel uncomfortable, CHANGE your position. Do some pelvic tilts, straighten and bend your arms and legs. It doesn’t have to look pretty, just MOVE!! And remember, the best and easiest way to undo tension after travel is to go for a short walk. Keeping moving and have fun!

Traveling is always so much fun but sometimes we come back needing a vacation from our vacation. What better way to ease back into your routine with a relaxing massage focused on helping you release those tight muscles from all the walking, cramped airplane seats and hotel beds.

If you’re dealing with neck pain, try using an acupressure point! Luozhen, meaning to “fall off pillow” in Chinese, is a special point that specifically targets neck pain.

To use it, massage the point on your hand seen in the image while moving the neck and trying to replicate the pain. Make sure to massage the hand that is on the opposite side of the pain. For example, massage your right hand if the left side of your neck has pain.

This massage may take a few minutes to provide relief but can be very effective!

Dr. Tiffanie

The best way to prepare your body before going on a trip is reflecting on what your normal triggers are. It’s easy to try all the stretching and massaging, but if you are not aware of what triggers your pain, it can be a little harder to manage your symptoms.

Before embarking on your next trip, take some extra time to recall what has cause pain or discomfort in the past. For example, if a certain range of motion while playing sports triggers shoulder pain or engaging in an activity such as hiking causes back pain, you will be better equipped to handle the activity and take measures to prevent injury.
